A small organic homestay in Kirtipur

Namaste. We’re Hira and Panta. We keep three rooms on the top floor of our home in Kirtipur, a Newari town at the quiet edge of the Kathmandu valley. Most of what reaches your table grew in the garden out back.

What’s included

It’s all in one rate. Three meals a day, cooked here, mostly from the garden. As much tea and coffee as you want. A bed on a floor that’s yours and the other guests’. €30 a night.

Trekking and guides are the one thing we set up separately, through our family’s company, Voyage Himalaya. There’s more on the trekking page, and more about the two of us on the about page.

Why people stay

From the garden to the table

The garden does most of the cooking

The garden wakes earlier than we do. By the time you come down, the chamomile has had its morning. Most of what reaches your plate grew a few steps from the kitchen: the herbs, the greens, the fruit, the eggs from our hens. Pick your own tea if you like. It’s better that way.

Kirtipur and the house

Forty minutes from Thamel, and quiet

Thamel is forty minutes away. Most of our guests go once and don’t go back. Kirtipur is older and slower, a Newari town of temple steps and narrow lanes, with a hill you can climb before breakfast. The valley’s last clean lake sits twenty minutes from our door, and in winter the migrating birds stop there on their way south.

Your floor

The top floor is yours, shared only with the other guests and never with us. One room has two single beds that join into a double. The bathroom up there is for guests only: hot water, western toilet.

Yes, and it usually holds.

Questions guests ask

Is the bathroom private?
The whole top floor is yours and the other guests’. The bathroom up there is shared between guests, never with us. Ours is downstairs.
We're allergic to cats and dogs. Are there animals?
A few free-range hens for the eggs, and nothing else. No cats, no dogs.
Do you speak English?
English and French, both. We learned the French over thirty years on the trail. The accents are Nepali and the grammar isn’t perfect, but it’s real.
Can you pick us up from the airport?
Yes. Send us your flight and one of us will meet you. There’s a small charge for fuel.
How do we book, and what if plans change?
Message us on WhatsApp or email with your dates and we’ll tell you what’s free.

What’s growing

We grow rosemary, tulsi, chamomile, shankhpushpi and peppermint for the teas. Avocado, guava, orange and fig on the trees. Turmeric and pumpkin in the beds. Orchids we didn’t plant and can’t take credit for. The fig tree continues to disappoint us; we keep it for the leaves and the shape.

We write down what’s ready each month on the blog.
